TITLE OF RESEARCH PROJECT

The Ideas of Copyright and Authorship in regards to the Physical Artefact in the Digital Media World

MODE OF PRESENTATION SELECTED

Symposium

DESCRIPTION OF SUBJECT TO BE INVESTIGATED

The main issue i want to look at in my Symposium is the idea that whether the photograph still needs a

photographer or a camera in regards to ideas of authorship and copyright on the internet. This debate

leads on from a few areas touched on by Fred Ritchin in his book ‘After Photography’. I want to

discuss how copyright seems to be outdated in regards to the internet and whether this is a true

statement. By doing this i will have to also talk about authorship and i want to focus on talking about

ways in which people are now Collaborating online with open sources to make new Art or in this case

Photographs. i will have to look at the issue of how authorship has become malleable in the Online

environment. I then want to talk about the physical Artefact and how by addressing these issues we can

put more Importance, provenance and appeal to our physical products as Photographers.

(Maximum 500700

words)

SOURCES TO BE UTILISED

I want to utilise theoretical books, especially in light of where the base of my idea has come from (after

photography, Fred Ritchin). I will have to examine ideas of Authorship which will require me to source

out specific texts, theories and articles on the subject. I will also look at first hand data, i will find

specific examples of practitioners addressing the issues i’m raising within their work and seeing how they

have adapted to them. I will try to Interview them and if not source previous interviews.

METHODS TO BE USED IN ACQUISITION OF SOURCES

Make full use of the university Library and their ‘LOCATE’ System. Contact practitioners i already

have a relationship with and see if i can use them as a contact to further possible interviewees. I shall do

this by email mostly but in some part may require the utilisation of such platforms like twitter, Google

Plus and Skype. it’s also important to talk to peers and other people as they may always have

suggestions on any information they have been exposed to which they find might be of use.

METHODS/FORMS OF INTERPRETATION/ANALYSIS TO BE USED WITH THE

INFORMATION AND SOURCES

Break it down into topics of the 3 main areas i’m looking at: Copyright, Authorship, Artefact. This will

help me categorise information that is relevant to each area. This is when i may get a cross over between

two or all categories which will only prove to show the importance and relevance of that research. Then

it will be a case of constructing an opinion and connections to start building my presentation.
