Second Attempt

Gaffa Tape works better.

On my second attempt i decided to use gaffa tape instead of the other quite weak tape i was using. this stableised the tripod alot better and i didnt have to stop the process to go and repair it as much.

i went out and documented the journey from coventry to my family home in lichfield. this was a chance of two journeys to get a good quantity of shots from every road that i travelled down to get there. on my first journey the composition of the camera had been disrupted so unfortunatly i couldnt use any of those shots. on my second journey i made sure that everything was stable and positioned correctly and i managed to take around 60 30 second exposures on my journey. i have narrowed them down to the ones i think will work best and i have printed them off to further narrow down to the final images i shall use.

I have chosen a final 9 images to document the journey. i need now to think about how i am going to get them printed and also how i am going to present them. i like the idea in the photograph above. its almost like a contact sheet with all the images but i think it works well as a kind of storyboard. i think it would be good if these were to be printed quite large, or the option of having one leading image very large. this all depends on the cost though. i need to think about framing options also and how much it will cost to get them all produced and presented.


Putting my Idea into Practice

So i have rented out a Nikon D300 with a 12-24mm wide angle lens and a remote shutter release. i had to figure out a way of attatching the tripod in my car and the best thing i could come up with was just using loads of tape and to drive carefully when i’m out to prevent the triod from falling over.

I went out and tested this but it was quite unstable, but the idea id working quite to plan and i am getting the same results that i pre-visualised. the wide angle lens is getting the right amount of car into the photograph that i wanted to create that frame i was looking for. i was taking exposures of around 30 seconds on an iso 200 to reduce the noise you can often get with long exposures using digital.

Here is an example of the results i’m getting. from here now i can start to think about the images abit more now that i know the idea is working. i’m thinking about how i can contruct a set of images in this way to answer the brief. there is many possibilities and i think i am going to keep on taking photographs and drive quite alot. i shall take it on every journey i make over the next few days. i’d liek to see how it would look with just one person in the car. i would probably be able to get more into the frame of the car interior from the outside landscape. also in my next attempts i will get a more sturdy tripod and some more industry stlye tape like Gaffa tape to keep the tripod more sturdy.

Lee Friedlander – America by car

I remebered a recent piece of work i had looked at by Photographer Lee Friedlander which is very similar to my idea for my project for this module. Friedlander frames these shots with his car interior and it displays this constant feature that carries on throughout the book. i have taken some inspiration from this in the way that friedlander provides this obstacle to the viewer. this work was produced in a recent world where the popularity of personal transport has boomed with everyone having cars and their own vehicles. i think this is a reference to the traditional works of america like ‘the americans’ by robert frank, which was photographed on foot, where as nowadays we see everything through the framing of a car. the subject matter in friedlanders book is often quite traditional landscape shots in their own. old buildings or trees and even this more traditional america. i think i can take alot from this work. i want to develop my ideas with the wide angled lens and the idea of journey and meeting other road users but i also want to experiment with the stationary car aswell. i want to give the impression that the car becomes the camera. maybe experimenting with the travel from busy cities to country escapism into vast landscapes.

Experimenting with HDR (first attempts)

After looking at HDR photography in my easter research and how the use of exposure time can generate these interesting images, i decided to give it a go and see what i could come up with. i took several exposures of my subject and asked them to be as still as possible. i didnt change my aperture, i simply just changed my shutter speeds and made different exposures heading from very dark to light. i then put them all into photoshop and experimented with merging them together.

I started out mixing with the opacity of each image and then merging them together which i found worked but not as well as i hoped and i also tired the automate – merge to HDR tool on photoshop but that wasnt very succesful either. i then started also duplicating layers and playing around with the colour balance and then merging seperate layers with seperate hue’s to achieve a nice mix of colour aswell as creating the HDR effect.

Idea and wide angle Lenses

i have decided to pursue my idea of taking photographs from within the car and using the interior as a frame. i have decided to ditch the pinhole in an attempt tog et a better quality image where i can control the focus. i have realised that to get the same effect i am going to need to get a hold of a wide angled lens to use also so i have been doing some research into how they work. i found this website quite helpful. i have also been getting some information from this website. it includes some interesting photos which deomstrate the capability of the wide angle.

i am going to look into what lenses they have available for me to use at the media loan shop and then see about doing some experimenting with a few. i need to be able to achieve that framed effect and finding the right angle to compose the car interior around the image.

Understanding Light and pre visualistation

I have selected a few images i have taken recently in which i have been experimenting with the understanding light workshop we were given. i have learnt how to use natural light better and also how to use it to get a pre-visualised image in my head. with these twi images i knew i would get a window reflection from the window behind me and exposed a shutter speed stop longer to make sure i caught this reflection for the glazed effect. for the one below i wanted to capturemore shadows on the gradient in the wall where it meets so i made sure i exposed it for a shorter time to get a darker shadow to create a more minimalist theme to the image.

With these above images i noticed patches of natural light falling through breaks in the trees and decided to try and use these like a natural soptlight on my subject. i exposed the film a little bit longer to create that illuminated effect.

With this image i knew i could get a slight silloette from the large window and light source outside. i knew that i could achieve a slight annonmous look for the people and make it quite a mysterious image. i knew the shadows would become greater as they reached the camera. i purposfully exposed this image a stop longer to get the desired effect.

Task Three – Control

This is the image i have produced for task three. i here have tried to take control of the situation. i have taken everything i have learned from the production of the first two tasks and taken it to develop some more ideas. i decided to take the pinhole from the roof and strap it inside the car. i took this idea from looking at justin quinnell’s work where he used his mouth as a frame for the photograph. i wanted to develop the idea of using my car as a frame for the photograph. i decided to take the picture at night once again and expose for the 30 minutes i had been doing but i would have hoped to have achieved more definitive lines of light. i retraced the same route as i had in task two again and wanted to achieve this idea of the car being still but the world outside moving, so i wanted to get that silhoette effect on the car interior.

Task Two – Portrait

For the second task i decided to take my pinhole back to the street in which i took the image for the first task. i wanted to do another 30 minute exposure at night but this time i decided to attatch the pinhole camera to the top of my car and drive up and down that street for half an hour with the shutter on the pinhole open. i really like the effect i have got with this idea. becasue you are travelling too fast to capture any people i am answering the task in the same kind of sense as in the first task. so to make a portrait of this place without any people i decided to try and achieve this abstract effect with the layers of light overlapping each other. i like the idea about velocity here and the fact you are travelling to make the image. i was retracing the same route over and over therefore certain lights are being retraced over and over onto the single frame.

Task One – Street Photography

This is my photograph i produced for this task. i decided to experiment with taking the pinhole out at night and i chose the location on the main street of coventry city centre. i took an exposure of 30 minutes. i placed the camera on top of my car. i thought that this would make a good image at night simply because of the difference to how it appears in the day. at night, with the longer exposure, you get more trails and more of a history of prescence from people. in the day you will get the images of people and cars at a more still point. i chose to do it at night becasue of this, to answer the task we were set, focusing on a place that changes with prescence of people and i have chose to manipulate the light to show that prescence instead of actually catching a shot of the people.

Aberlardo Morell and Camera Obscura

in order to understand how the pinhole is working i have been looking into camera obscura and how this dates back to as early as the renaissance period. i came across an article in a recnt National Geographic Issue and saw some work by the photographer Aberlardo Morell who experiments quite alot with Camera Obscura to create his images.

It’s great to see these impressive pictures when you can display how the camera works on a bigger scale. Morell literally transforms these hotel rooms into a camera and then is left with these fascinating and interquet projection like images covering the walls.

Here in thsi image for instance you can see how exactly the camera obscura works and if you transform the scale down to the size of a matchbox you can understand whats going on inside the pinhole. Morell is effectivly creating a pinhole in a much bigger space. i have experimented myself with the literal prjection of images onto objects and what not but i really liek the idea of manipulating what is already there. you are not introducing anything new, you are just manipulating light. it’s definatly an idea to develop on and maybe even experiment with in this project.
